Red Farmer simply won’t quit. Despite being 92 years old, racing is the lifeblood that keeps him going. It’s not just a sport for him; it’s a reason to live, a passion that drives him every day. His determination is nothing short of remarkable, and over the weekend, he proved that yet again.
Although a stroke last year forced Red to step out of the driver’s seat, it didn’t stop him from being involved in the sport he loves. He may no longer be behind the wheel, but his hands are still busy under the hood of race cars, showing his continued dedication.
This past weekend marked the start of Red’s 77th year in racing, a truly astonishing milestone. 77 years in motorsports—few can even imagine such a legacy. Red, an iconic member of the Alabama Gang, has overcome challenges that would have stopped most people in their tracks:
- Numerous broken bones from crashes
- A devastating airboat accident that cost him two fingers
- A helicopter crash, which left him with deep scars but also with a powerful reminder of life’s fragility—he survived while his close friend Davey Allison tragically didn’t
- Double pneumonia, which nearly claimed his life
- The global Covid-19 pandemic, which made its mark on everyone
- And, in 2024, a stroke that affected his mobility and vision
Despite all this, Red Farmer’s love for racing is unshakable, and he’s gearing up for another year in the sport he’s dedicated his life to. For many, the idea of Red starting his 77th season of racing may seem unbelievable. But when you understand Red Farmer, it all makes sense. Racing is the essence of who he is, and it’s clear that it’s what keeps him alive, both in spirit and in action.
It’s safe to say that Red will keep on going for as long as he can. His resilience and passion are boundless, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him continue to inspire for many more years to come.
