New York Jets Sign Rashad Weaver to Strengthen Defensive Line in NFL Free Agency
The New York Jets have made a notable addition to their defense, signing edge rusher Rashad Weaver to a one-year contract as part of their NFL free agency moves. This signing reflects the team’s commitment to reinforcing their defensive line and providing depth ahead of the 2025 season. Weaver, a talented pass rusher with experience and potential, brings a much-needed boost to the Jets’ front seven.
Weaver, 27, was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. During his college career, Weaver stood out as a dominant force on defense, earning All-American honors and establishing himself as a top prospect. His ability to pressure quarterbacks and disrupt plays made him an appealing choice for the Titans.
In his three seasons with Tennessee, Weaver showed flashes of his potential. His best year came in 2022, when he recorded 5.5 sacks, 49 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 15 quarterback hits. Despite these strong numbers, his role began to diminish in 2023, and by the 2024 season, he found himself struggling for playing time. He played just three games for the Houston Texans, logging only 14 defensive snaps before eventually spending time on the Los Angeles Rams’ practice squad.
Now, with a fresh start in New York, Weaver has the opportunity to revitalize his career. The Jets see him as a valuable addition to their defensive rotation, particularly with starting edge rusher Jermaine Johnson working his way back from a torn Achilles tendon. Adding depth and experience to the defensive end position was a priority for the Jets, and Weaver’s skill set fits their vision.
Head coach Robert Saleh expressed optimism about the signing, noting Weaver’s potential to contribute immediately. “Rashad brings a lot of energy and physicality to the defensive line,” Saleh said. “We believe he has the tools to thrive in our system, and we’re excited to see what he can do when given the opportunity.”
Weaver’s versatility as a pass rusher and run defender makes him a strong fit for the Jets’ defensive scheme. He’s known for his quick first step, strong hands, and ability to set the edge against the run. If he can recapture the form he showed in 2022, he could become a key rotational piece alongside players like Johnson, John Franklin-Myers, and Bryce Huff.
For Weaver, this one-year deal represents a chance to prove himself.
