After suffering a major crash earlier in the season, Mikaela Shiffrin had serious doubts about whether she would even be able to race again, let alone claim her 100th career World Cup victory. But against all odds, the American skiing legend returned to competition and reached the milestone in stunning fashion last Sunday.
In a deeply personal and detailed interview for a special episode of the Stifel Snow Show—which aired on NBC Sports and is available on YouTube—Shiffrin opened up about the emotional and physical journey that led to this triumphant moment.
“This Win Means More Than Just a Number”
Despite already holding the record for the most career World Cup wins in Alpine skiing history, Shiffrin emphasized that this victory carried a deeper significance beyond the numbers.
“There’s so much more meaning to this one than a number or a record,” she said. “I wouldn’t say it’s a relief, honestly. I would say it’s almost a surprise after everything that’s happened in the last months. I honestly did not anticipate 100 was going to happen this season, so I’m thankful.”
For Shiffrin, reaching this milestone wasn’t just about adding another victory to her name—it symbolized resilience, perseverance, and the ability to rise above adversity.
Battling Through Injury and Uncertainty
Throughout most of her World Cup career, Shiffrin managed to stay relatively injury-free. However, the last two seasons have presented some of the biggest physical and mental challenges of her life.
In January 2024, she crashed in a downhill race, suffering ligament sprains in her left leg that forced her to miss 11 consecutive races. That was already a difficult setback, but worse was yet to come.
On November 30, 2024, Shiffrin endured another devastating crash in a giant slalom event. This time, the injuries were even more severe—she sustained a deep puncture wound that tore through her oblique muscles and came dangerously close to damaging her internal organs. The injury sidelined her for two months, leaving her uncertain about her ability to return to the sport at the highest level.
A Mental Battle as Much as a Physical One
Recovering from her injuries was not just a physical process—it was a psychological one as well. Shiffrin revealed that the mental fog she experienced after the November crash felt eerily similar to what she went through following the tragic passing of her father in 2020.
“It has been feeling very similar, to be honest, to this kind of mental fog that I had the year after my dad passed,” she explained. “So communicating that, talking with my psychologist, talking with teammates, letting anybody and everybody kind of give me advice, and the main thing that everyone said is the only way to move through this is to get the exposure and to keep doing it (ski racing).”
By leaning on her support system and slowly working her way back onto the slopes, Shiffrin was able to rebuild her confidence and eventually return to racing form.
Shiffrin’s comeback season is far from over. She is set to compete in a giant slalom and slalom event next weekend in Åre, Sweden—a venue that holds a special place in her career, as it’s where she won her first World Cup race in 2012 at just 17 years old.
Beyond that, she will celebrate her 30th birthday on March 13 before heading to the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley, Idaho, from March 22-27. The season-ending event will give her one final opportunity to add to her incredible win total and further cement her legacy as one of the greatest skiers of all time.
