Verstappen Reflects on P6 Finish, Cites Hard Tyre Strategy as Key Misstep
Max Verstappen admitted that a strategic miscalculation cost him a stronger result at the latest Grand Prix, where he finished sixth. The reigning World Champion reflected on the team’s decision to run the hard compound tyres during the race, calling it a misfire compared to the performance of the medium tyres.
“We thought the hards would benefit us in the second half of the race, especially with track temperatures dropping,” Verstappen said post-race. “But they just didn’t give us the grip or performance we expected. The mediums were clearly the better option.”
The Dutch driver struggled to extract pace from the harder rubber, slipping back from potential podium contention while rivals on medium tyres gained ground. Verstappen noted that while the strategy looked sound on paper, the real-time execution proved otherwise.
“In hindsight, it’s always easier to judge,” he added. “But when others were gaining time and we weren’t able to respond, it was clear something wasn’t working. The mediums had much more bite, and that made all the difference today.”
Despite the setback, Verstappen remained composed and focused on learning from the experience. “You can’t win them all, and strategy plays a huge role in races like this. We’ll review everything and make sure we come back stronger next weekend.”
The P6 finish dents Verstappen’s otherwise consistent campaign, but he continues to remain in the thick of the title fight. With Red Bull known for its adaptability and quick turnarounds, the team is expected to regroup quickly ahead of the next Grand Prix.
As the season heats up, every strategic decision will count — and Verstappen knows that refining their approach could be the key to defending his crown.
