Dr. Umar Johnson’s criticism of Vanessa Bryant centers on her financial decisions following Kobe Bryant’s tragic passing in 2020. In a recent public statement, Johnson alleged that Vanessa has directed Kobe’s fortune toward initiatives that predominantly benefit non-Black communities while neglecting African American institutions. He specifically pointed to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation’s partnerships with universities such as the University of Kentucky, Duke University, and the University of Connecticut—all predominantly white institutions.
“With all due respect to the late, great Kobe Bryant, it is unacceptable that his wife, Vanessa, has not prioritized Black empowerment with his wealth. The money that should be used to uplift the Black community is instead going to institutions that have historically excluded us,” Johnson stated.

Additionally, Vanessa was instrumental in funding the renovation of basketball courts in North Philadelphia, a predominantly Black area, allowing local youth to have better access to sports facilities.
