Serena Williams is making it clear that she is not lightening her skin. The tennis star has been accused by fans online that she is using products to appear lighter.
âFor all the haters out there, I do not bleach my skin,â she said via Instagram Live on Monday, Dec. 2. âThereâs something called sunlight and in different lighting, you get different shades.â
She told fans that she loves who she is and decided to speak out because she wanted to clear up the rumors.
âIâm a dark, Black woman, and I love who I am, and I love how I look, and thatâs just not my thing,â Williams said. âAnd if people do it thatâs their thing and they have every opportunity and they should.â
âI donât judge, but you guys do,â she continued. âBut thatâs what this world is about and I stay in my lane, the non-judgy one. But no, I actually donât bleach my skin, so can we just kinda clear that up?â

While Williams is clearing up rumors, the 23-time Grand Slam champion is off to putting fitness at the forefront of her life again.
âIâve gotten obsessed, more obsessed with diet and exercise, I think, than when I was playing tennis,â Williams tells PEOPLE. âI knew that I was going to burn 20,000 calories a day, and now Iâm like, âOh my god, I donât know how many calories Iâm going to be able to burn!ââ
Williams announced her retirement from tennis after 26 years, she still has new goals she wants to hit.
âLook at me,â Williams tells the publication. âIâm trying to compete â not compete, rephrase â trying to do a half-marathon. Thatâs my new goal. So itâs just like I have to do something competitive. I miss tennis like crazy.â
She continues, âBut as a woman, I had to make different choices that I probably wouldnât have had to make if I were a guy, but thatâs okay, I love that. I love that I chose my family and I want to be around them every single day of my life. And I try to do that, and I just figure I want to be the GOAT at something else. And for me, thatâs being a mom right now.â
Williams shares two daughters â Alexis âOlympiaâ and Adira â with her husband Alexis Ohanian.
