£35m Liverpool player is surely about to play a new position after today’s injury news – opinion

Just as they were starting to get some players back, Liverpool have seemingly been dealt a new injury blow today.

With the likes of Thiago Alcantara returning, Sunday’s game at Arsenal should have signalled Jurgen Klopp having his strongest squad available.

But following news of Darwin Nunez’s pre-match injury, Liverpool were actually a little under strength at the Emirates. This undoubtedly played a part in the Reds losing 3-1 against Arsenal.

One of those missing was midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. Having only just returned from injury, Szoboszlai felt something in the days leading up to the match and was subsequently ruled out.

Now, it’s been reported that the 23-year-old could miss the full month of action for Liverpool.

Whether or not those reports turn out to be accurate remains to be seen. But if Szoboszlai really is out for a little while, then Klopp simply has to turn to Alexis Mac Allister in his place.

Mac Allister ready for new role

On Sunday, the manager kept Mac Allister in his deep-lying role with Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch either side of him.

As seen by Jurgen’s furious berating of Gravenberch after Arsenal’s opener though, the 21-year-old is not yet ready to be a regular starter. With Wataru Endo available once again as a 6, Mac Allister has to be pushed upfield.

Before he left for the Asian Cup, Endo was in terrific form as Liverpool’s deepest lying midfielder. As Mac Allister was out injured at that time, we didn’t really get to see him reap the benefits of that himself.

Now though, with Szoboszlai set to miss some important games, the choice is obvious for Klopp.

Mac Allister has actually been really good as a defensive midfielder of late. That continued on Sunday where he was arguably Liverpool’s best player against Arsenal.

But despite his excellence as a 6, it’s further up the pitch where the £35m signing from Brighton really wants to play. Mac Allister is at his best when he’s breaking up play and creating chances. He can do that to good effect with the protection of Endo behind him.

Meanwhile, Thiago being fit once more leaves Klopp a slight dilemma on the left of his midfield.

In our opinion, Jones still isn’t doing enough to demand that he starts every game. It isn’t a popular point of view, but we think the 23-year-old needs to be doing much more. Until then, his spot will remain under threat.

Thiago is potentially still Liverpool’s best midfielder and if he proves his fitness, for us, he gets that spot. The Spaniard may not be ready to start just yet, but when he is, Endo/Thiago/Mac Allister looks like a handy midfield to us.
