‘It doesn’t get mentioned’: McCoist says 27-year-old Liverpool player is actually ‘different class’ in the air

Ally McCoist has shared the area of Diogo Jota’s game which does not receive enough praise as the Liverpool star shone in the first-half against Chelsea on Wednesday night.

It was Diogo Jota who broke the deadlock during the clash with the Blues at Anfield. The Portuguese did brilliantly to bundle his way past a couple of Chelsea defenders before firing home his fourth goal in his last four appearances in all competitions.

Jota has been exceptional since recently returning from injury. He has certainly established himself as the talisman of the Liverpool attack in Mohamed Salah’s absence while he has been away on international duty.

Ally McCoist says Diogo Jota doesn’t get enough credit for how good Liverpool star is in the air

Before the 27-year-old broke the deadlock against Chelsea, he nearly scored with an early header after Liverpool were awarded a free-kick just outside the Chelsea penalty area.

Jota did brilliantly to win the header. And speaking on TNT Sports (broadcast on 31/1; 20:27), Ally McCoist suggested that the forward deserves more credit for how good he is aerially.

“I tell you, sometimes it doesn’t get mentioned, he’s different class in the air. He really is, Jota. For a man of his size, he times his run, he times his jumping really, really well. Terrific header of the ball, scores lot of goals with his head,” he said.

Reds hitting top gear at the right time

It will be frightening for Liverpool’s rivals to see how good they have been recently. They have been without the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andrew Robertson, Wataru Endo and Mohamed Salah. And yet, they have barely been knocked off their stride.

Jota is one of those who has stepped up massively in the last few weeks. And it feels as though everyone is peaking at the right time, particularly as Manchester City really start to find form themselves.

It is certainly looking as though Jurgen Klopp is handing over an incredible group of players to his successor in the summer.
