Report: Liverpool are now trying to appoint the man who signed Xabi Alonso for key role at the club
There has been so much talk about who Liverpool’s new manager will be after Jurgen Klopp. Xabi Alonso is obviously the big favourite among the supporters. And rightfully so. He has a special connection with the fans, and has a remarkable job at Bayer Leverkusen.
But as much as appointing a new manager as soon as possible is the utmost priority for Liverpool, there is another vacant position the club has to address as well.
On the same day Jurgen Klopp left the club, the Reds announced that their sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke was also to leave. This makes Schmadtke the third sporting director to leave Liverpool in the space of just a few years, after Julian Ward and Michael Edwards.
Which means Liverpool must now find a suitable long-term candidate. And who better than the man who has already appointed Xabi Alonso in the past.
Liverpool eyeing Tim Steidten
Steidten is currently employed by West Ham United. He signed the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez for the club. But previously he was in charge at Bayer Leverkusen, where he played a key role in recruiting Xabi Alonso as the club’s manager.
It would certainly make sense to go for Steidten on paper. Especially if Alonso will be the next manager of the club. Steidten’s record as a sporting director at Bayer Leverkusen speaks for itself. He played a key role in scouting and recruiting a plethora of talented players. Including the likes of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.
