‘He fits FSG’s model’: Sky pundit backs ‘outstanding’ coach to become Liverpool manager, not Alonso

Xabi Alonso rose above everyone’s list when Jurgen Klopp shocked the footballing world by revealing that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.

That call will continue to hurt the Liverpool fans for a long time because of the legacy the German will leave behind once he has gone.

But those in the Anfield boardroom have no time to dwell, they need a replacement. It will be interesting to see when the official announcement is made because it might not come until after the season is over.

Sources have told HITC Football that Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi are on Liverpool’s list of managers to come in next season.

Stephen Warnock labelled the Brighton manager as ‘outstanding’ and someone who ‘fits the model of FSG’, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

Unlike Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester City, where they spend for fun, that isn’t the method of Liverpool and you would expect that won’t change when the new manager comes in.

Albeit on a smaller scale, that’s something Roberto De Zerbi faces at Brighton and Stephen Warnock thinks it has equipped him for the gig on Merseyside.

Roberto De Zerbi – Next Liverpool manager?

“I think Alonso’s name will be in the mix,” said Warnock. “I also think De Zerbi’s name will be in there as well. The style of football.

“The big thing for me is, when you are following Jurgen Klopp and what he has brought to the football club, you need a big personality. Does De Zerbi have that big personality in front of the camera? Or is it now they go away from that personality and they go for the style of play to bring success onto the pitch?

“De Zerbi is that type of manager who has shown, in a short space of time, that he is an outstanding manager and an outstanding coach.

“He also fits into the model of FSG. It’s important the manager who comes into the football club does exactly what Jurgen Klopp did. That’s, not run the club in a certain way, but run within those constraints of how they do the transfer dealings. And how the football club is run. I think De Zerbi has also done that at Brighton and understands that role.”

Roberto De Zerbi at Brighton

The issue with De Zerbi is that he is at a club where there is hardly any pressure. You can go through barren runs without anyone noticing.

Brighton were smoked 4-0 by relegation-threatened Luton Town on Tuesday and have now won just three games from their last 16.

The Italian isn’t exactly getting verbal pelters for that, from the media or from his own fans, so he can go through it.

Plus, when you compare it to what Alonso is doing at Bayer Leverkusen, then it’s not something a possibly incoming Liverpool manager should be doing.
